This painting was the result of a special adventure to the top of Mauna Kea. After making it to the height of 13,000 ft above sea level, breathless and awed by the beauty and sparseness of the volcanic rock, I turned a small one over only to find the body of a Monarch butterfly. I couldn’t imagine what storms had carried this tiny magnificent creature so far from the safety of the shore below, and I was inspired to place him with symbols from traditional Hawaiian culture.
